Geyser Repairs
Pretoria North
Geyser repairs, Pretoria North: test the part before anyone sells you a geyser. Most geysers that stop heating, trip the power or drip from the overflow need one part, not a new tank.

What a geyser repair usually turns out to be
Three parts fail far more often than the tank itself, and each shows up differently.
Kwikot, one of South Africa's big geyser makers, names three main causes of geyser failure: a pressure control valve that has failed or is missing, so full mains pressure sits in the tank; a sacrificial anode that is used up, so the steel starts to corrode; and a thermostat stuck closed, so the element never switches off.
Elements wear out too. Kwikot puts their life at five to seven years in most South African water, and a well-kept geyser at eight to twelve years. A geyser whose anode is checked and whose valves are kept working outlasts one that is only looked at when it bursts.
That is why a repair visit tests before it quotes: the element, the thermostat, the valves, the drip tray and its pipe. If the tank itself is leaking, the geyser has to go, and you see where it is leaking before you pay for a new one.
After the power comes back in Pretoria North
City substation trips, not load shedding, are what geysers here live with now.
36 hPower outage in Pretoria North after the Van Riebeeck substation failed, 27 to 30 March 2026
Eskom has not load-shed since 16 May 2025, but Pretoria North's lights still go out. The suburb runs off City of Tshwane substations, and at the end of March 2026 the Van Riebeeck substation, working without its protection system after vandalism, left most of the suburb without power for more than 36 hours, with one feeder cable serving about 70% of Pretoria North. In June 2025 the Wolmer substation, which serves Wolmer, Ninapark, Theresapark and part of Dorandia, was off for three days of repairs.
After its September 2026 substation trip the City's advice was to keep appliances unplugged until power had been safely restored. A geyser cannot be unplugged. It switches straight back on when the power returns, and a thermostat or element near the end of its life takes that jolt with everything else.
Pressure is the other half. National rules let municipal pressure run as high as 900 kPa at a house connection, while the pressure control valve on a geyser is rated at 400 or 600 kPa: that valve is what keeps the tank inside its rating. Tshwane has blamed burst mains in nearby Sinoville partly on high water pressure, and after a water outage the supply comes back with air and pressure swings behind it.
So after an outage, the faults to look for are a geyser that trips the breaker, will not heat, or starts dripping from the overflow. Each points at a part: the element, the thermostat, the pressure control valve or the safety valve. None of them, on its own, means the tank is finished.
If your geyser started misbehaving within a day or two of a power or water outage, say so in the request. It points the test at the right part first and keeps a working tank in your roof.
After an outage, a geyser that trips, drips or will not heat needs its thermostat and pressure valve tested before anyone talks about replacing it.

Geyser repair cardTested, then priced
Tested
Element, thermostat, pressure control valve, safety valve and drip tray, each result written down.
Part or geyser
The failed part named and priced. A new geyser quoted only with a photo of why.
Warranty check
Age and serial number checked first, so a geyser under the maker's warranty is not claimed on your insurance.
After the repair
Refilled, air bled and valves checked before the power goes back on, then the breaker tested.
Repair parts and the labour to fit them carry a three-month warranty under the Consumer Protection Act.
Repair first, and proof when it cannot be repaired
A geyser is the most expensive thing a plumber can sell you, so it is the last thing quoted.
A geyser that stops heating usually needs a thermostat, an element or a valve, not a new tank, so the cheapest honest answer is a tested one.
If the tank is gone, you see a photo of where it is leaking or rusting, with the reason in writing and the replacement price, before any work starts.

Four steps from a cold shower to hot water
The geyser is switched off at the board first, and on again only once it is full.
Tell us the symptom
No hot water, tripping, dripping or too hot. Say if it started after a power or water outage.
Isolate and test
Power off at the board, water off at the valve, then each part tested before anything is replaced.
Agree the repair
The failed part, its price and the labour, agreed before work starts. Nothing extra without your yes.
Prove it heats
Refilled, air bled, power on, breaker tested, and the water temperature checked before the plumber leaves.
Geyser repair questions
Asked most often before anyone climbs into the roof.
How much does a geyser repair cost in Pretoria North?
The part decides it. Elements, thermostats and valves are small items next to a whole geyser, which is why the test comes before the quote. Procompare's 2026 guide for Pretoria North lists labour at R400 to R900 an hour, with parts on top, and you hear both once the fault is tested.
My geyser trips the breaker since the power came back. Is it finished?
Usually not. A breaker that trips when the geyser switches on most often points at an element that has failed, and sometimes at the thermostat. The element is tested first; the tank only matters if it is also leaking.
Faults in the wiring or the distribution board are for an electrician, and the plumber will tell you if that is where the test points.
Why is water dripping from the pipe on my outside wall?
That pipe is the overflow from the safety valve or the drip tray. A steady drip usually means the pressure control valve is letting full mains pressure into the tank, or the safety valve is worn. A steady flow of hot water is more urgent: switch the geyser off at the board and send a request.
Should I claim on insurance or pay for the repair myself?
Check the geyser's age first. If it is still under the maker's warranty, the maker should be your first call, which keeps a claim off your insurance record. If it is out of warranty and only a part has failed, the repair can cost less than your excess. A burst tank with ceiling damage is what insurance is for.
How often should a geyser be serviced?
OUTsurance suggests every three or four years where the water is good, and every second year where it is poor or hard. A service drains the tank and checks the anode, element and thermostat. There is no published hardness figure for Pretoria North's water, so the state of the anode at the first service is the best guide for your house.
Why does my geyser keep burning out elements?
Because the cause was never found. Elements burn out early when the geyser runs partly empty (air in the tank after a water outage), when the thermostat fails closed, or when scale builds up around the element. A proper repair includes the reason, so the new element does not go the same way.
