Gas Geyser Installation
Pretoria North

Gas geyser installation, Pretoria North: two jobs in one. Plumbing carries the water; the gas line, cylinders and heater need an installer on the SAQCC Gas register, whose certificate your insurer will ask to see.

How a gas geyser works, and what it needs

Hot water on demand from LPG, with no element and no tank in the roof.

A gas geyser, properly an instantaneous gas water heater, heats water as it flows. Open a hot tap and the burner lights; close it and the burner stops. There is no tank to keep hot, and on most models nothing depends on mains power except, on some, a battery or small plug for the ignition.

It needs three things to work well: enough water pressure to light the burner, a gas supply that will not run out mid-shower, and a spot on an outside wall or a proper flue. Some heaters need a fair amount of pressure to start, which matters in parts of the north where the supply weakens at peak times.

A common set-up is two LPG cylinders on a changeover valve, so the second takes over when the first runs dry. The cylinders, regulator and gas pipe are the gas installation; the cold feed, hot pipes and connection to the house are the plumbing.

Where the cylinders may stand in Tshwane

The City's fire by-law, not the installer's preference, decides where LPG goes.

100 kgTotal LPG in cylinders above which Tshwane's fire by-law requires a certificate of registration

Pretoria North has good reason to look at gas. The suburb's power comes from City substations that have failed for days at a time, including more than 36 hours at the end of March 2026, and Tshwane's residential electricity went up 8.8% on 1 July 2026, to between about R3.24 and R4.46 a kilowatt-hour. A gas heater keeps the showers hot when the grid does not.

Gas comes with its own rules, and in Tshwane they sit in the Fire Brigade Services By-laws of 2016. Home LPG installations must be installed and handled in line with SANS 10087-1, and LPG may only be used or stored within the property boundary, at the safety distances that standard sets. Store more than 100 kg of flammable gas in cylinders and the by-law requires a certificate of registration.

Those distances are why the cylinders are the first thing an installer looks at. Supplier guides that summarise SANS 10087-1 keep cylinders at least a metre from a door, two metres from an open drain where leaking gas could gather, and five metres from electrical switches and motors such as a pool pump. In a narrow side passage between a house and a boundary wall, that rules out more spots than people expect.

The paperwork is national. Under the Pressure Equipment Regulations, a gas installation needs a Certificate of Conformity from an installer registered with SAQCC Gas for that class of work. SAQCC Gas warns that without a valid gas certificate an insurer is within its rights to turn down a claim, and a seller must hand a copy of the certificate to the buyer.

So before a gas geyser is quoted, the walk-around is about the cylinders: where they can legally stand, how they are protected, and how a refill gets to them.

Settle where the cylinders will stand before you choose the heater, and do not pay the final amount until the Certificate of Conformity is in your hand.

  1. Site check

Cylinder position against the SANS 10087-1 distances, the wall or flue for the heater, pressure at peak time.

  2. Water side

Cold feed, hot pipes and the connection to the house, pressure-tested before the heater is lit.

  3. Gas side

Cylinders, changeover, regulator and gas pipe, leak-tested, by an SAQCC Gas registered installer.

  4. Handover

How to change a cylinder, what the heater needs to light, and how refills reach the cylinders.

  5. Certificate

The Certificate of Conformity for the gas installation, with an itemised invoice.

Keep the Certificate of Conformity with the house papers. A buyer must get a copy when you sell.

Water side and gas side, both signed off

The water side and the gas side are each finished, tested and documented.

Gas geysers let people down in quiet ways: a heater that will not light when two taps run, a cylinder that runs out mid-shower, a certificate nobody can find when the house is sold. Each of those is settled at installation.

All three are settled at installation: a pressure test on the water side, a leak test on the gas side, and the certificate at the end.

The cylinders decide the layout, so they are settled first.

  1. Site look

Where the heater and cylinders can go, the water pressure, and the route for the gas and water pipes.

  2. Quote both sides

Heater, cylinders, changeover, regulator, piping and labour, itemised, gas and water separately.

  3. Install and test

Plumbing connected and pressure-tested, gas installed and leak-tested, heater commissioned.

  4. Certify

Certificate of Conformity issued, flame and temperature checked at the taps you use most.

Gas geyser questions

What to know before the cylinders arrive.

How much does a gas geyser installation cost in Pretoria North?

It depends on the heater, the length of the gas and water runs, the cylinders and the changeover. No current Pretoria price guide gives an all-in figure worth repeating, so you get an itemised quote after the site look, with the heater, the gas work and the plumbing on separate lines.

Will a gas geyser work when the power is off?

Most instant gas heaters light and run without mains power; some use a battery or a small plug for the ignition. Check this on the model you choose, because a heater that needs a plug stops during an outage like the rest of the house.

My water pressure is weak. Will a gas geyser still work?

Instant heaters need a minimum flow to light the burner. If the pressure at your house drops at peak times, the heater can cut out when a second tap opens. Pressure is measured on the site look, and a low-pressure model or a pressure fix is part of the quote if it is needed.

Where can the gas cylinders go?

Outside, on your side of the boundary, and at the distances SANS 10087-1 sets from doors, windows, drains and electrical points. Tshwane's fire by-law makes that standard binding, which is why the position is checked on site rather than guessed.

Do I need to tell my insurer about a gas geyser?

Yes. Tell them about the installation and keep the Certificate of Conformity: SAQCC Gas warns that without a valid gas certificate an insurer may refuse a claim. If you sell the house, the buyer must get a copy.

Gas geyser or solar geyser?

Gas heats on demand and most models keep working through power cuts; solar costs nothing to run in sunshine but needs a backup for cloudy spells. Some homes use both, with solar preheating and gas as the backup. See solar geysers in Pretoria North.
